A carpet is a better choice over other flooring styles though it demands major investment. There is whole range of styles and patterns to choose from. A carpet on floor provides comfort, especially in colder regions. Another advantage of having a carpet is that it creates a style statement in your home. You can easily take care of a new carpet. But before reaping all these advantages, you need a proper fitting. To make the job of carpet fitting easy and fast, you should follow some carpet fitting tips. These tips are all about the measurement and tools required for the task.
Taking measurements for Carpet required
Perfect fitting of the carpet depends upon the perfect measurements. It is important to find out the exact amount of the carpet required. This will help you keep the seams to minimum. Perfectly measure the room where carpet is to be fitted. Also measure all the angles in the room where carpet needs to be fitted, measure every nook and corner.
Tools required
Carpet fitting is done using various specialized tools. Instead of buying all the tools, you can rent some of the tools from a home refurbishment store nearby. Tools required include scissors, a bolster chisel, a knee kicker (also called carpet stretcher), a hammer, a saw and a carpet knife.
Other supplies include tackless strips (wooden or metallic) for securing the carpet, carpet iron to melt the glue to attach the seams together
Carpet cutting
Cutting the carpet needs precision and skill. Follow the measurements closely to get the size and the angles exactly you want. While cutting, add few inches to the measured length, to be safe. When you lay down the carpet on the floor and remove all the wrinkles, you can cut those extra inches.
Laying the carpet
- Before the carpet is laid, remove the old carpet and vacuum the place.
- Nail the tackless strip along the perimeter of the room. The tackless strip has the rows of the pins to secure the carpet. These are fastened near the wall on the floor.
- Put the underlay within the limit of tackless strips. Fasten the seams together.
- Spread the carpet and attach the machine cut side of the carpet to the tackless strip.
- Starting from the centre outwards, stretch the carpet to other walls of the room. To make the carpet flat and wrinkle-free, cut a notch at each corner.
- Use a knee kicker to stretch the carpet into corners. A knee kicker is a tool with toothed head.
- Use a bolster chisel to press the carpet into the join of floor and skirting. Now trim the carpet by running the carpet blade into the floor-skirting join.
- Seams should be in straight lines. Edges should be glued with latex adhesive or adhesive tape.
In spite of all these descriptions and rules it may not be easy to fit a carpet by yourself. Remember that you can always hire professional carpet fitters who will do the job properly and efficiently. You wouldn’t have to worry about any calculations, cuts and gluing. It would be quite convenient, wouldn’t it?
