Kitchens would be pretty useless without a sink so if you plan to update this key area of your home then using the sink as a starting point is a great way to get the overall look right.
Consider your space
The amount of room you have available will largely determine the type of sink you invest in. If you have a larger area then you have the freedom to choose pretty much whatever design you want such as a two-bowl sink or porcelain Belfast sink or even an industrial sized sink to get the look and practicality of a professional kitchen.
What types of sink are available?
The amount of different styles of sinks available is vast and kitchens are no longer restricted to just a plain stainless steel sink. The most common type of sink is the inset which is slotted into a hole in the worktop and overlaps the surrounding surface. Integral sinks offer a more modern take on the inset sink as they are moulded out of the same material as the work surface and therefore offer a sleek and seamless finish. Flush mounted and undermount sinks are similar in design as they are fitted underneath the work surface rather than on top of it which creates a unique and hygienic finish. Belfast sinks are a popular choice for traditional kitchens due to the robust but beautiful design. As they are so large and made out of eye catching porcelain, they can create a real feature in the room.
What materials are available?
Natural stone such as quartz or granite is a great choice for a sink and can be integrated into your new worktops. Natural stone fitters can even create bespoke finishing touches to the sink such as draining grooves. The only issue with natural stone is that it can be prone to chipping so avoid costly scratches by using a stylish washing up bowl. Bleaching natural stone (especially marble) can also damage the sink so ask for advice from your supplier before you clean the stone. Wood may seem like an unusual choice for a sink but it is actually very simple to maintain and can really add a touch of warmth to your decor. Stainless steel and ceramic sinks are the most common as they are easy to clean and more scratch resistant than other materials.
What about taps?
Although it may sounds obvious, it’s important to ensure the taps you choose complement your new sink. Your choice will be restricted by the size of the tap holes in your sink so it’s wise to plan ahead and purchase your taps at the same time as your sink so your ideal taps can be easily fitted. Mixer taps are a modern option where the water flows from the one spout which can be easily moved. Mixer taps are often safer as it’s easier to control the water temperature. Traditional sinks would look great with the classic look of two separate taps in copper or stainless steel.
Starting your redesign theme with your sink is a great way to create a stylish design and get the overall look you want.
